Energy communities are local organizations that facilitate energy sharing, often within villages or smaller communities. The Swedish Energy Agency (Energimyndigheten) recently highlighted the importance of adapting the energy community concept to Swedish conditions, which is a central goal of this project. Insights from earlier initiatives, such as E.ON’s microgrids at Åstön and Simris, have shown that local engagement and dialogue are crucial for success. Drawing on these lessons, the project will work to ensure strong local involvement and tailor energy solutions to rural realities.
The project team includes key partners such as LTU, KTH, RISE, and Coompanion, with Skellefteå Municipality and Skellefteå Kraft acting as important references. Together, they aim to establish at least two energy communities by 2026. In addition to this, the project will create a knowledge hub to support future initiatives, strengthening local communities' capacity to handle energy challenges.
Beyond the establishment of energy communities, the project seeks to contribute to national energy goals and promote a broader societal dialogue around sustainable energy use. The initiative includes educational programs and business model development, creating a one-stop shop to simplify the process for future energy community projects.
The project's findings will be shared through scientific publications, conferences, and regional forums to engage more stakeholders and inspire further action.
